Further Clarification on Sanctification

29 10 2008

One point that I did not touch on during my last post on Sanctification is the tendency for those of us in the church to use “churchy” activities thinking that somehow those are more holy than “secular” activities.  Luther stood diametrically opposed to this thought.  In Luther’s Small Catechism, the Table of Duties explores and the many ways in which we serve God and do good in His name in our everyday life.  Those in government, families, craftsman, really everyone have a vocation in the name of Christ.  There is no distinction in our sanctification between the work done in Christ’s name by a pastor or by a garbage collector.  We revere the work and people who serve the church professionally, but they are no more holy for their work than the mother taking care to teach her children.
